Eric Henshaw of the Bomberos Volutarios, Cumbre del Sol addressed the Rotary Fellowship Costa Blanca North on Friday, 12th May and spoke of the origin and development of the voluntary fire service established in Benitachell. Many members remembered last year’s disastrous fires that drove hundreds of people from their homes, and left acres of devastation in their wake, believed now to be the result of a cigarette thrown out of a car from a viewing point.
The Fellowship made a presentation of €500.00 to the Firefighters as a token of the gratitude of local residents for the service. The money will be used to maintain and update the volunteers equipment, much of which was destroyed in last year’s fire. Nearly all of the firefighters themselves are ex-pats from a number of European countries, and are nearly always the first responders to fires within a 20km radius of their base.
